…the world of fallen men does not honor God. Millions call themselves by His Name, it is true, and pay some token respect to Him, but a simple test will show how little He is really honored among them. Let the average man be put to the proof on the question of who is above, and his true position will be exposed. Let him be forced into making a choice between God and money, between God and men, between God and personal ambition, God and self, God and human love, and God will take second place every time. Frequently our choices – individually and corporately – leave us in the Spiritual desert. Tozer was famous for his expository teachings and was very concerned for the vital life of Christ’s Body – His “church.” This brings to memory one of his most memorable phrases. When considering revival, he knew human pride was the primary stumbling block. A breakdown of hubris was necessary for revival to do it’s work. “The plough precedes revival” was his observation. Planned and organized revival meetings do not guarantee a lasting movement of the Holy Spirit, he observed – only when human weaknesses were purged, does the melody linger on. The most lasting revivals were spontaneous.

Sorry for the delay in responding!
I haven’t read much Tozer yet (Knowledge of the Holy and Pursuit of God). Where is this quote? I definitely want to read more. He was a very insightful man, and when I read him I get the distinct impression that he speaks not as one who thinks he has all the answers but as one who has seen firsthand how the Spirit of God works in our lives.

“…not as one who thinks he has all the answers” Very true, Sarah – true because as far as I know he had no official seminary education – self (read Holy Spirit) taught all the way. No ego installed by the above institution. I have most of his books and am having trouble fining that quote. I made a wall plaque of it many years ago with Hosea 10:12 as a follow up. “Break up your fallow ground…” gives the intent of his thought.
