My most prized possession is…
There are many things that I treasure. It’s almost impossible to choose between them. How could I? Each one is unique, not only for what it is, but for the sentiments it evokes.
How could I choose, for instance, between the first draft of my novel which took me four years to write, and the twelve-string guitar that my mother used to play when she was pregnant with me? Each is precious for its own reason, and cannot be trumped by another. The first reminds me that I can accomplish whatever I set my mind to doing (even if it takes several years), and the second reminds me that my life has always been a song.
How could I choose between a letter from my Grandpa, who almost never wrote letters, and the copy of Tyndale’s New Testament that Jack sent to me? Or between the song Jenny Aldrich wrote that has been in my music binder for years, and the earrings I wore the day Jer sat in the station wagon with me while the rest of the family went shopping in Green Bay? Or between the Junior Asparagus that Bob gave me several years ago that lights up and hums the “God is bigger than the boogey man” song, and the cake decorating tips that Steven gave me? Or between the “Todd fell down” cartoon that Angie drew for me in high school, and the Precious Moments coloring book picture that Joel colored for me when he was away at North Central? Or between the chopsticks Kristin sent from Okinawa, and the Night Sky bandana that Maggie and her clan gave to me this last birthday? Or between the green toilet paper from my freshman year at college (my guess is that Jenn doesn’t realize I still have it), and the MooBossy cow from Jesse and Sara?
How can I choose? How could I possibly choose?
Do you remember when we wrote about the things we collect? I told you that I collect characters. I think that’s the point behind all of these treasures. It’s not about the “stuff,” but about the people I remember when I look at the stuff. Every treasure has a story. Every story has characters. And every character is my prized possession.
All my love,
