Our best kept secret family recipe is…
If any family has a stash of incredible secret recipes, it’s ours! The question has more answers than there are people in our family. In fact, it would be much simpler to tell you that a few years ago your Aunt Maggie collected some of our favorite family recipes. If you’re looking for a recipe, she is apt to have it. Several of the recipes include BBQ Baked Beans, Cut Out Cookies, German Potato Salad, Goulash, Jer’s Famous Sandwich Wraps, Red Cake (and Frosting!), Rodger’s Enchiladas (which I still can’t make as well as he does), and, of course, Veggie Dip. Maybe if we all ask her nicely, she’ll organize them into a book for us.
But just in case you don’t have it, here’s the best secret recipe in our family—Grandma Heidi’s Hot Cocoa Mix. Nothing warms you on those cold Northern Michigan days like this creamy Hot Cocoa!
18 C. dry powdered milk
2 C. powdered sugar
4 C. Nestle’s Quick
1 C. Coffee Mate
Mix all ingredients well in a large bowl.
Store in an airtight container until ready to serve (we always used a gallon ice cream bucket).
To serve: Place ¼ cup Momma Heidi’s Hot Cocoa mix in coffee cup; fill with boiling water and stir until dissolved. Top with marshmallows if desired.
All my love,
Aunt Sarah
P.S. Those of you in Canada may need two cups to warm up, eh.
